Disposition Authorities for Individual Classifications for Headquarters Case Files. Part B: Classification 120. Federal Tort Claims Act.

This classification covers FBI investigations undertaken when the Government is involved in a civil suit over its alleged negligence or liability, usually in connection with accidents or one sort or another. The classification was established in 1946. The initial investigation is conducted by the agency against whom the claim is made. The Bureau becomes involved at the direction of the Department of Justice if the claim exceeds $1000. "Major disasters" are investigated immediately by the FBI.

The FBI established this classification when it assumed responsibility for ascertaining the protection capabilities and weaknesses of defense plants. Each plant survey was a separate case file, with the survey, supplemental surveys, and all communications dealing with a plant insofar as plant protection was concerned, filed together.
